Not without reason was he called flying tank, the Ilyushin Il-2 "Sturmovik" proved to be the most powerful combat aircraft of World War II. It was designed in 1938 by Sergei Vladimirovich Ilyushin, and as it was identified in VVS report it was a single-engine attack monoplane and tactical bomber. The Il-2 was preferred to the Su-2 for that type of missions. The first prototype, the ZKB-55, appeared in the spring of 1939 but an obvious lack of power was a big problem. He was immediately put into serial production after the third prototype had answered the desired characteristics.

The entire front part of the IL-2, i.e. the engine and the cockpit, was a single shielded shell, representing over 15% of the overall weight of the aircraft and also serving as a carcass. All vital parts of the machine were strongly protected but this solution caused a weight gain together with the combination of a reinforced structure for armor plates. The IL2 was strongly armored on the sides of the cockpit and the glass was also shielded. Meanwhile the fuselage was made from a classic wooden and metal structure.

From his first fights in summer 1941, the Sturmovik proved to be very effective against tanks showed it a year later when one aircraft equipped with projectiles dropped them from 100 m and destroyed everything on the area of 1000 m2. This device was very impressive so many nicknames were attributed to him by the communist propaganda such as "Black Death" or "flying tank" but also by the Germans such as "the Butcher" or "Gustave steel".

As a disadvantage Sturmovik was very vulnerable during hunters attacks from behind. Because of this situation in 1942 some units transformed their IL-2 by simply installing a machine gunner behind the pilot. Modified that way, the device became very unstable but a true two-seater was designed in July 1942 and was produced in large numbers. The Il-2M3 was equipped with a more powerful engine.

The Sturmovik participated in all operations on the eastern front and was outstanding in the Battle of Kursk in the summer of 1943 when it faced massive formations of German tanks. His career successfully continued after the Second War, it was supplied to major satellite countries of the Soviet Union in the version Il-10 and participated intensively in the Korean War. It was the most produced attack aircraft of World War II with 36,163 copies.
