Introduction 1985
Gulfstream from the beginning of its manufacturing activity had ambitions to make an aircraft with supreme characteristics so that it can be used in different field. Finally with the design of Gulfstream IV they fulfilled their wish as the aircraft set a bunch of world record for the aircraft of its class and is used in different field including business aviation, military use and even in scientific field as it’s used by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Previous planes of Gulfstream G class had quite a success; they also were widely used in commercial aviation as well as in military field. Having in mind all mistakes of previous generation bizjets Gulfstream started the design of G-IV that was in a great demand and is still in service.

The construction of Gulfstream IV started in 1993 in collaboration with Grumman. The initial plan was to create a Gulfstream III with stretched fuselage and different engines and later the company made a decision to redesign wing completely. It allowed creating airplane with greater range and better aerodynamic characteristics.

The initial plan included a 65 percent modification of wing chord so that the control surface wouldn’t need any redesign. Also they wanted to modify inboard wing but as it required rebuilding of fuselage floor the idea was rejected. The outboard wing was modified to reduce the peak subcritical pressure coefficient. As a result The Gulfstream IV has a specific wing with weaker and more swept outboard shock the result of what was a lower cruise drag. Furthermore, new wing design lowered root bending moment and stall speed and increased fuel volume thanks to a longer chord. All these modifications led to range increase for more than 550 km.

Besides the wing the fuselage was lengthened getting one more window and tailplane was 1.37 m longer than the one of Gulfstream III.

G-IV carries the maximum weight of 33200 kg, being able to accommodate 19 passengers. It can fly at 13700 m altitude with maximum speed of 935 km/h. The airplane range is 7820 km.
The cockpit of Gulfstream IV was made of glass making G-IV the first jet with such a solution for cockpit.

The aircraft conducted its maiden flight on September 19, 1985. In one and a half year in 1987 the jet received its class FAA certification and the deliveries started. The airplane entered into service in 1987.

There are several variants of Gulfstream IV. The original G-IV that was described before is mostly used for VIP transportations and charter flights. Later it was re-designated G400.

In 2002 was created the shorter variant that was designated G300 which still has high speed and long range typical for G series aircraft.

In 2001 Gulfstream began the design of improved variant that then was named G450. It can be called a hybrid of A400 and A550 as the design is based on G400 but it shared with G550 the same forward fuselage and larger cockpit. The shorter variant of G450 was named G350. The production of aircraft started in 2004 as the company intended to replace old G400 with them.

There is also a military variant of the jet that holds a name C-20F/G/H/J. The aircraft is in service of Department of Defense. It is used to transport high officers, commanders and executives. Sometimes it is modified by removing seats to transport different cargo.

Another GIV user is National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration which operates exactly GIV-SP (G450). It is modified for special purpose as it can carry scientists at the height of 13 720, e.i. exactly above some tropical cyclones. So that they can drop special dropsondes which are devices that measure windspeed, barometric pressure, humidity, and temperature during their fall through the cyclone on the surface of the ocean. This samples and measurements give forecasters the possibility to predict the possibility of hurricanes and wind shear that can influence the force of hurricane.

Gulfstream IV was definitely a successful model of the company that due to its long range, high service ceiling and near supersonic speed can be used in different fields for different purposes. Jet set 22 records in 1987 while flying west around the world in 45 hr and 25 min. In 1988 it set 11 records flying east around the world. In total for 2015 862 aircraft were built.
