From the very beginning of the project, Gulfstream laid hopes on its G650 model. When the programme was revealed in 2008 the company announced that it was going to be its fastest, largest and most expensive business jet. And indeed the aircraft is one of the most advanced and comfortable airplanes in service now.

The design is similar to the previous gulfstream projects, such as G550 but still has some peculiarities. Also it’s faster, longer aircraft with more powerful engines. G650 is powered by 2 Rolls-Royce Deutschland BR725 turbofan powerplants of 71,6 kN thrust each.

The wings of the G650 were made separately according to completely new design that was completed in 2006. Since that time the wings went through the number of testing in wind tunnel that ended in 2008. After years of design and testing the result was low wings of 30.36 m wingspan. The wings had a greater sweep of 36 degrees than the G550 has with its 27 degrees. The manufacturer claims that the design was made with the only purpose which is to improve performance. That’s why the leading-edge of the wing represents a continuously changing curve that forms a different airfoil each time allowing it to maximize wing aerodynamic qualities. The winglets on the wing tip have the same effect.

The G650 fuselage isn’t with a typical circular cross-section but with oval one with a flatter lower section. The fuselage is assembled from metal but composite materials are also used in aircraft construction: the tail, winglets, rear pressure bulkhead, engine cowlings, cabin floor structure and many fairings.

The Gulfstream bisjet is called one of the most advanced in the world for a reason. Like Dassault Falcon 7X its control system is solely fly-by-wire. Flight surfaces are moving with the help of electronic system in particular dual hydraulic systems.

Finally aircraft was rolled out in September 2009 and on November 25, 2009 it conducted its maiden flight. After hours of testing started and until 2011 it was successfully passing all of them. But in April 2011 G650 conducted a test take-off with simulated one engine failure. The aircraft got off the ground for a quick moment at a high level of attack then it hit the runaway with one of wingtips, slid on the runaway and flamed out killing all four people on board. After the accident the crashed aircraft was grounded but the rest test jets continued testing.

In September 2012 the Gulfstream G650 received its FAA certification and was firstly delivered to the private customer Preston Henn in December of that year.

In 2014 Gulfstream announced that the extended variant of the plane is in development. It was called G650ER. The aircraft has an extended range of 13900 km thanks to the greater fuel capacity. The extra fuel is kept in the spare place inside the airplane wings that allows modifying existing G650 into the new variant instead of building it from the scratch. The new variant was certified in 2014 and started deliveries that year ahead of planed 2015.

The aircraft got a certain success and in 2014, as its older brother G550, won Collier Trophy for safety, technological advancement and cabin comfort of the business aircraft.
