In early 2000 Boeing began the development of new 787 Dreamliner that supposed to threaten Airbus A330. First, Airbus didn’t consider the threat as serious. But later airlines pushed the company to propose a competitor.

First Airbus was thinking about new modification of A330 called A330-200Lite with better aerodynamic qualities. But after meeting with potential customers, Airbus president and CEO Noël Forgeard decided to make a new design. The result was a new aircraft with fuselage cross-section and assembly. It had new wings, engines and tail. During the production new composite materials had to be used as well as new production methods. So in December 2004 the programme was officially launched and designated A350.

At first Airbus wanted to construct an airliner with A330 fuselage but with new wings and engines; the main material of fuselage had to be aluminium-lithium, and not carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer. But this design was publicly criticized by number of Airbus’ large customers. So in March 2006 the decision was made to make a clean-sheet design.

The result of the decision was an aircraft with new fuselage named A350 XWB (Xtra-Wide-Body). Right after the release of new design Singapore Airlines placed an order for 20 aircraft with options for other 20.

The new designed fuselage would accommodated 8 to 10 seats per row and had a maximum capacity of 440-475 passengers. This fuselage would be 12,7 cm wider than A350 cabin but 28 cm narrower than Boeing 777. Every variant of A350 would have a range of at least 15000 km. The material of fuselage would be mainly composite which could give higher cabin pressure and humidity and lower operating expenses.

After a number of delays and several design changes the airplane was finally rolled out. It was a wide-body low-wing monoplane powered by 2 versions of Rolls-Royce Trent XWB powerplants. First version was 370 kN engine and the upgraded one is 432 kN powerplant for A350-1000 variant. The A350’s first flight was conducted on June 14, 2013 from Toulouse–Blagnac Airport. In a year A350 received EASA certificate and in October 2014 it became the first aircraft ever that was improved by ETOPS as "ETOPS Beyond 180 minutes" before entry in service. This approval allowed it to fly on one powerplant for more than 6 hours.

On December 22, 2014 the first A350-800 was delivered to Qatar Airways. It conducted its first commercial flight between Doha and Frankfurt in a month on January 15, 2015.
As for September 2015 there were 11 A350 aircraft constructed by Airbus. But to October 2015 there were 787 orders for several variants of A350: 16 for -800, 596 for -900, 175 for -1000.
