After the first several years of Airbus A300 being in service it appeared that most operators didn’t have enough passengers to fill the large airliner or wanted a lower aircraft-mile cost that’s why the need for a smaller aircraft emerged. Airbus decided to make an appropriate derivative of A300.

The capacity of a new aircraft needed to be smaller, but that meant that the wings and undercarriage of A300 were oversized. That fact could cause unnecessary fuel spending as the aircraft had extra weight. Likely, that time British Aerospace, which could design new wings, decided to join Airbus Industrie and became a full part of A310 program.

After years of work in 1978 at Hanover Air Show, Airbus presented a new A310 model. It was a twin-engined wide-body jet airliner with typical passenger load of 195 in two-class or 245 at economy. The main differences from A300 included shorten fuselage, different wings made by British Aerospace, redesigned undercarriage with carbon brakes fitted as standard, integrated drive electrical generators, etc.

The two versions were planned: A310-100 and A310-200. The last one got more demand as its range was on 1900 km longer and MTOW was higher. After its presentation in March 1979 Swissair ordered 10 aircraft and right after her 10 more were ordered by Lufthansa.

The orders continued to come and by the time when A310-200 performed its first flight on April 3, 1982 there were orders placed for 181 aircraft. There were no orders for A310-100 that’s why the company decided to stop offering it and none of them were constructed.

In the 1990s the demand for A310 got low as any operator wanted more advanced A330 and in 2007 the Airbus announced it cancelled the production of A310 together with A300.

In total 255 aircraft were produced several of them are still in service at Fedex Express with 20 aircraft; Air Transat (9); Mahan Air (8) also there are several in Pakistan International Airlines; and SATA International.

The Airbus A310 at the beginning gained more demand than its predecessor A300 what showed that the company learnt from own mistakes. The aircraft weren’t the masterpieces but they gave a really good start for the Airbus letting them to go further with more ambitious projects as A320 and A330/A340 and made them a serious competitor for Boeing.
